Xorg in Ubuntu Feisty is neat

remember the time i complained about xorg being tooo difficult? I got my hands itchy last few days, and decided to remove xorg.conf and let the xorg 7.2 to do the thinking. According to the xorg site, xorg should be able to figure out settings itself without a preconfigured xorg.conf. So there i went.

*poof*

*ping piank*

 *zzzztt.*

it worked! i only need to make sure i connect the external monitor while booting up (note: only if i need the support for my Samsung 225BW), then have the 915resolution commands started (i put them in my /etc/init.d/gdm), i should be able to get all the desired resolution ready without any xorg.conf in my system. Only one hitch: i might need to restart xorg if i cannot get widescreen to work immediately, no idea why, but killing xorg is kind of fun.)

now what i have is to boot it once and get it working with 1680x1050, then suspend my notebook while commuting between different locations. The resolution change applet comes in handy to switch resolution when i have another setting. no more headaches in configuring xorg myself! I hope this will work for you too, since many have landed at wahlau.org for the xorg setup how-tos... perhaps it is time to close this chapter, and venture into other topics ;)

have fun... it is nice to have xorg handling some details for us.
