Xinerama works!

after many months since my Dell 201FP came to my office, i have used dual screen on Ubuntu Breezy without problem - almost without problem. One thing that i did not got it working was xinerama, the nice thing that allows you to share/combine two screens as one desktop. It was kind of like an impression that xinerama would only work when i have the same resolution on both screens, is wrong. This was pointed out by Darrick last night when he left his comment here.

So today i've decided to take a short break to test things out. After a short while (about 30 minutes actually), i finally got it working! it was actually a minor tweak on my existing xorg.conf, and i've notice some parameters have to be there in order to get it working.

note to self:

1. never put a xorg.conf in your $HOME. restarting gdm uses xorg.conf from home instead of from /etc/X11 :)

update (20.12.2006):
Dave commented and asked for a sample xorg.conf. For interested parties, download it here. I have however no time nor chance to test it now, since the 20" is in the office :) but if anyone faces problem, please leave a message and i will look into it. Else i will see whether i have time/chance to try it out to confirm before the long christmas break (yahoo!).

merry christmas and a happy new year :)
