it is again weekend. Not that we have finally nothing to do. a project is gonna be carried out - home server. TzeYing finally got her computer upgrade (mainly for her job) now, so the old trustworthy t20 should be retired to less portable tasks. So i popped in the Ubuntu Dapper CD and after 40 minutes it is up and ready :)
the weekend is still packed with programs. we have shopping to do, and also routine house cleaning. I still have some documents/books to read, and a document to work on. We have a few appointments this two days, and i believe if we planned our time ok, it would still be rather relaxing - i still need some time to recover from my flu.
the home server should serve us files and CVS. it should also be our testbed for something we would like to experiment. now all 3 machines are with Ubuntu, which i hope it will be simple for keeping them updated.
France managed to survive the cruel world of soccer - the team has made it to the next round. Pity Korea though... although we were happy for France since my colleague is from France, and we would not want to see him sad for the next weeks ;) As i have told him many times - "the ball is round". Anything can happen ;)
time to move on. it's a sunny and beautiful day, so let's enjoy it. God bless.
project notes:
1. Samba - while installing Samba on a fresh dapper box, it won't work directly. I doubt it is a problem at my end. After googl'ing, the solution is found here.
2. NFS - NFS can be used to share files for the linux machines. so the same public folder would be accessible via nfs too. Intruction found here.
3. CVS - used notes i made long ago, and things works just as i hoped (no break down, no 5 hours searching for a clue). Production should continue on as usual.
coming up:
1. streaming server? well, not really necessary since we have online server. but to play perhaps it might be interesting enough to know how it actually works :)
2. photo/media server? might be nice since we have quite a huge photo database now (thanks to digital cameras:P)
3. apache2 + php + mysql + ruby + blabla - a web server is kind of must. we have on and off production stuffs for friends and clients, so we need a local testbed too.

Suspend works?
Is suspend working for you with dapper on the T20? Some other people
reported a bug about it.
I have a T20, too and am considering switching from Mandriva/KDE.
i have no idea
Hi,
i think you are right... i tried the Fn+F4 and Fn+F12, and both did not work! it is non-critical for me, since the T20 is now a slim server :) but i think we should take a look into it... how about edgy? perhaps it is fixed in edgy?
T20 and edgy with ACPI seems to be a no-go
The T20 and ACPI didn't work for me with Edgy, as documented here:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_on_a_ThinkPad_T20
I may try to see if APM works, by booting with noacpi acpi=off and then using "lsmod apm'.
However, with Mandriva 2006, ACPI works to suspend the laptop....

How interesting if I can do
How interesting if I can do the same project for my box. Still million of things for me to learn from my sifu here. Hope you'll recovering from runny nose soon, take vitamin c a lot.
aiyo
hi yazid,
aiyo, don call me sifu lah. me no qualify for such a title...
regarding your comment: you can do the same! just need to figure out what's your need, and research on what are the possibilities to do it with FOSS software. You will be surprise many things are possible and doable nowadays.
am better now, and still am enjoying football on TV :)
