It's finally weekend, and i have decided to take an hour out, to play with the OS2008 on N800. it is already a week since an official beta was released, but i have been considering hard whether to do it or not. Guess now you get the answer already ;)
flashing the new OS is easy as before. after that you get the same old procedure - name the device, set up languages, set up phone and internet connection and you will be greated with the new interface. my impression - neat! the look and feel are definitely worth the upgrade. Speed wise it is also faster, due to the new clock speed (400Mhz) . Things look quite different, but it is a matter of adapting it.
next thing is the internet connection setup - added wlan just in minutes. Software installation is as before - go to maemo.org, checkout the .install files and there you go. Only problem - many software refused to install due to a missing libbz2-1.0. Checked out google but found nothing... only to realise i can perhaps overcome it by installing FBReader first (libbz2 comes with it). after that, python and UKMP are installed without problems :)
Perhaps it is still BETA - the browser crashed pretty often while i am looking for software to be installed. Skype works and Gizmo should too. I would not really try it out now, for two reasons - i still need to do dual boot and i don keep my personal data on the flash because this is a shared unit. so i have things running on my SD card instead. second, the main thing is to see how it works, and try to get some little tests with python. I don really need all kinds of gadgets and toys up :) Perhaps when i get myself a unit i will play more.
UKMP looks better than before... it is fast and has a rather intuitive interface. I would also wait for Marcelo for the new Canola 2.0 (should get it perhaps next week!). Stay tune for a video sharing how i get it running... would be neat and cool, especially when i can write some plugins for canola... let's see.
for those who look for software for OS2008, check out the working software list. If you have some ideas or wishes what you would like to see running on such a device, do tell! who knows someone will pick it up and start doing it! we need ideas and working software to further exploit the potential of such tablets... and i bet you and i can help by giving ideas.
