recovering from crash and burn

remember the post where i mentioned i got my SD card "crashed and burnt"? Byte did point me to an entry in maemo bugzilla with similar problem, but i doubt it is identical to my case. Anyway, after long procastination (the card actually sat at my office desk for a week!) i send the card back to Amazon. I must praise Amazon for its great service - an email was replied within 24 hours, and a refund was made 2 days after i send off the card. So bye bye Sandisk Ultra II. apparently somewhere in the Internet i read about a faulty batch. I think it is just my luck, i hope.

So at this point, i need another card. Reason - i want to run tests and own personal stuffs on the N800 i've got from my department. Hence i made another order, from amazon, again. THis time, no more Sandisk Ultra II. The search ended up with a Sandisk Extreme III... which is slightly more expensive than the ultra II (i checked, about 8 Euro more). But to my surprise it was worth the extra bucks.

In the package, i have the same thing like the Ultra II. But, the set comes with a SD card pouch key chain too! Included is also a software CD for data recovery, which i doubt i need but who knows. So putting the package together, it is surely worth the stack up a little. But upon using it, i realise i should have gotten this card earlier.

The speed of this baby is noticable when compared to the Sandisk Ultra II. The 20MB/s rating really shine when compared to the 9MB/s rating of the  Ultra II. You might ask why do i need the speed? I don't, actually. But now running the OS 2007 on the Extreme III gives a whole new feeling. I believe its speed gives a better user experience even if compared to the original flash memory. No wonder some in the mailing list mentioned about faster speed on SD cards. I only wish now that i can use the cards for a few years instead of a few months... :)

So if you ask me which card to get for your tablet, or your camera, i will suggest to go for the faster and reliable ones. It is worth your money, especially by read/write and also reliability. Some might still break, but that is definitely a luck related thing.
