had tried and used opensync a little a while ago, and did got things almost working. "Almost" is because my phone entries somehow went cuckoo because of the syncs, and i am too lazy to be disciplined. so this round, i have decided to be more organized and focused - hence the attempt again to get opensync working and to serve me.
This article is written for Series 60 phone (such as Nokia N70, Nokia N73 and others) users, who wish to synchronize their phones with Evolution on Linux, for instance. Depending on phone models, some minor details might need to be changed. If you find the following instruction too concised, perhasp go visit my previous article here.
System : Gutsy Gibbon, nothing much customized, and standard opensync from the universe.
Devices : Thinkpad T43, Nokia N70, Nokia N800.
run an apt-cache search opensync to find the plugin you need. for me i only needed irmc and evolution. perhaps i will try google calendar next. so the command will be
$ sudo apt-get insatll opensync-plugin-evolution opensync-plugin-irmc opensync-plugin-syncml opensyncutils multisync-tools multisync0.90
on second thought, i have also included syncml, just in case if i need it.
when done, it is time to configure it. either you start the gui, or follow the instruction in the opensync wiki or some like the nice one done by Andrea. My working irmc configuration is as follow:
<?xml version="1.0"?> <config> <bluetooth_address>00:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX</bluetooth_address> <bluetooth_channel>11</bluetooth_channel> <interface>0</interface> <identifier>PC Suite</identifier> <version>1</version> <wbxml>1</wbxml> <username></username> <password></password> <type>2</type> <usestringtable>1</usestringtable> <onlyreplace>1</onlyreplace> <recvLimit>10000</recvLimit> <maxObjSize>0</maxObjSize> <contact_db>Contacts</contact_db> <calendar_db>Calendar</calendar_db> <note_db>Notes</note_db> </config>
i realise <onlyreplace> value does make some differences. So far i can put 2 to make sure everything from the phone is the main source/db (I always put evolution as 1, phone/pda as 2). but after playing around i think the value 0 still works best for my calendar sync. so will stick to that. Another thing - sometimes the process will take real long, so you never get a successful sync - and that will screw things up badly. I ended up spliting everything up as seperate - todo, calendar are for each device pair a standalone config. not sure will this really help, but it worked for me well.
i will recommend to backup everything important, and start with a blank calendar. after playing with the parameter and different update possibilities, you will surely get things working in the way you can understand. and very important - once runnin, don't change and play with new settings unless you can afford to loose your synchronized data!
when ready, test with either command line or the graphical interface Multisync-qad (why qad?). I will not repeat that, unless i find time later then i will include screen shots. else, i think it should be pretty straight forward.
Evolution sync with N800
coming soon.
