well, reporting away from home. ahem ahem.
if you have been following the development of different gadgets, especially the linux ones, you will surely not want to miss this. The Nokia N810 is released today (for those still having 17.10.2007) (hmm, one day before the Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon is released :P). In my case as i read it it is already 18th now.
What's new, as everyone will ask... i see in the press release OS2008. ... perhaps this would be the Maemo 4.0 Chinook, and its physical apprearance and features are different from the Nokia 770 and N800. Software wise N800 software should be compatible with the OS2008. i would certainly hope so too. Else the developers will be cursing again for ditching some of the loyal early adopters. As claimed in the press release, both should be running the same os... i did not recall that N800 is already running Chinook...perhaps soon then.
The N810 is stated to be smaller than N800 (a good thing) and has a slide keyboard (another good thing!). It even has a GPS built in. From thoughtfix's blog you can see how small it is as compared to the N800.. i myself don't find the design not nice, except the d-pad is funnily placed in the slide keyboard area. It means now i need to slide the keyboard out before i can use the D-pad? perhaps there are newer approach/interface for it? no idea until i get my hands on one of it. For specs, read here. 400Mhz is nice... but remember Iphone's CPU power? hmm. But with this, it is still possible to squeeze 4 hours online time. that is sweet.
The internal storage now is reported to be 2GB, nice. At least people will not compare it with many media devices that offer much more than 1GB for movies and music. and the memory card extension will allow up to 8GB space. In my opinion, that is a lot for many normal users already. Even if it is in MiniSD format (or MicroSD with adapter), it would do for many normal users.
Will i get it? it is a price question actually... imagine if it costs until christmas 479USD (read it somewhere.. hmm), doubt i will make any plunge. I am now more than happy using and trying the N800. With the future updates, the N800 is going to be a nice device. Had brought it along for holidays and work, and i appreciate its form factor and ease of use (normal use, of course). So with N810 around, if N800 is going lower than 250Euro, it will be a nice gadget at a good price.
for more information, i believe you will find it at many blogs soon. Keep an eye on Maemo.org and Nokia, and hope this round Nokia has produced a nice consumer product that will encourage a taste of the future - mobile computing.
side note: what if in months to come, and we have a N815 that is basically N810 without the GPS and minus the 100-200USD? hmm, then it sound really yummy ;) time to sleep :)
