i think people who follow and keep track on the nokia Internet Tablet development have already got used to the Hildonized tablet desktop. It is something that you and i will see on Linux Mobile platform too (ubuntu Mobile i think). But at the same time, there are actually work to get your common (or favourite?) desktop environment on the tablet...
today i came across a work done by Penguinbait - he actually got KDE 3.5.6 running on the Nokia N800! If you check out the date, he actually posted his work back in March... boy how have I actually missed that? anyway, while checking it out, i also found that he got OPENBOX-Rox and XFCE working too! As some from the IT forum have commented, now the Internet Tablet really give a feeling of real mobile Linux box. It will now perhaps work like your normal box, only smaller and mobiler!
at the same time it brings back the same question - do choices help pushing the unit and linux/FOSS further? I realise the majority masses are not exactly excited with choices. They prefer something common, something everyone should know and use, and something that works without much "hacking". Granted that hacking is not for everyone, choices might also not end up as something for everyone too.
I believe both directions are important. Hacking should continue to bring in ideas and newer stuffs. On the other hand, there should be effort to keep things working for the normal user (like you and i?). It must at least work flawlessly, but best if work intuitively without much effort to learn or relearn something. Apple has been doing this over and over since IPod (perhaps earlier), so everyone has now already the standard set - can it just work?

LINUX on Nokia
I setup a fairly easy install script/process for install XFCE with any partitioning, it will install in a EXT2 file residing on and VFAT or MS formatted SD/mmc card.
