we went for a short "semi"-backpack trip last weekend, since it was a long weekend (public holiday on thursday) and my parents were in Europe visiting the eastern part. Therefore we went over to Slovakia's capital - Bratislava.
the best part of the trip is - no planning ahead. Therefore we do not know what we will do there, and where we will put up a night. So this was what we ended up with - no hostel can accommodate all 8 of us at the same time. We tried to call a few from the tourist information centre at the train station, and the best we could get was Hostel Possonium - so we quickly make reservation and went over. It turned out that the hostel made a mistake. There weren't 8 places available. We somehow manage to get the hostel to provide 6 places (with extra beds) and both of us need to look somewhere else - that is how we ended up in this place - Hotel Spirit.
From the outside look, i thought i was looking at another Hundertwasserhaus. But since we need to quickly find a cheap place for a night's stay, we went ahead. The hotel, despite its almost-spooky look, was actually acceptable. The room was clean, quite clean, and beds were good for sleeping. We are of course not comparing it with any 3 stars hotel, but i can assure you it is at least better than many hostels in Italy :)
After some chit chat with the guy working there, we realised that he was the one who did all the artistic work - paintings and decorations in the hotel. We are of course pretty impressed, even though we are no modern art lover. It is not easy to run hotel, and being able to bring in such concepts into it could only be harder. Therefore a plus for this, even when we are not fans of such style. TzeYing said for hotel she can accept it, but surely not something for our home, anytime :)
A tip - they offer breakfast for the price, and you can actually ask them to deduct it if you decide to have breakfast else where. We did that because we planned to have breakfast with our family the next day, and we got 160SK back (around 5.20Euro or RM26) - not much but better than none :) The guy was kind of disappointed, and kept telling us their breakfast is "special". Well, perhaps it was also a good thing that we did not had breakfast there. Some reviews i read, after returning from the trip, complained about their breakfast offer. Apparently it is only adequate to many. Well, what can you expect from 2.50Euro actually?
The second night we manage to get beds in Hostel Possonium, so we joined our family. If any of you really need a cheap and good accommodation in Bratislava, i would recommend Hostel Possionium. If you insist of trying Hotel Spirit, i don't think there is any harm but to us, it is more like hostel standard than a hotel. The price for a double room with bathroom was 1830SK (303RM or 60Euro) including breakfast - not exactly the price you expect from a hotel. But it is definitely an ok price when you compare with other 2-3 stars hotels (they all range from 80Euro and above). When hostels are fully-booked, you might then consider Hotel Spirit.
for some pictures, go here. i will write another other things on our trip slowly, when i have the time :)
