I admit it - i have no patience and i want things fast. It is 6 days from the release of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibix. So i waited until today where the RC is released, and i made an dist-upgrade. Note that you need really at least 1.6G if you want to go the "update-manager -d" way. i somehow could not squeeze out that much space, so i burnt the RC iso in to CD, and went the CD way. It is pretty simple - insert cd, and click on upgrade.

I noticed i have quite some junks so i did some clean up, and now let's welcome the spanking new system, hopefully with no hiccups. More details if i notice something new and face no problem during the weekend ;)
update:
it took almost 2 hours to get things copied/downloaded and installed. And guess what? My update actually did not complete successfully. In between certain updates were not installed properly. So after the update window closed, i started the almighty console, and ran a "dpkg --configure -a". The upgrade is more complicated than i thought. many questions asked, and i just select the default choice.
hopefully nothing broken in the process. shall update soon after the upgrade process is over.
update2:
after completing the manual configuration and repeated a few apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade, i think the system is finally upgraded. Result? it booted without problem, gave me not such a correct resolution welcome screen, and still able to display at the right resolution when i run xrandr --auto. Mayanna/Gimmie crashes, so switching back to normal menu. Other softwares seem to be running, so that is a good sign.
Openoffice 3.0 is not included, so i went over to the ppa to install it manually. Well, i will not wait until Ubuntu 9.04 to use it :) i hope the choice is not wrong :) so i assume i don't really need to reinstall many things. It should just work (with all the manual changes.)
good time to stop playing with it :)
