after days of patience training, the day i've been waiting for since weeks is here. Today Ubuntu released Edgy Eft.
for download of iso, i propose to use the torrent file. Then you can also help to distribute the iso to others who might need it from a computer near (or not near) you . For Upgraders (like me), check out the upgrade instructions.
so i'm off to my alternate and normal iso download. see you soon :)
during upgrade report:
1. the graphical upgrade using Update Manager does not seemed to work... perhaps i have a rather mixed up installation here, that's why. so i went to console path. it went on pretty ok.
2. i think my gizmo installation is giving me problem. it complains it cannot install libavahi* that is already installed by bonjour... and apt-get remove bonjour won't budge. so i did a workaround. i removed ksysguard and ksysguardd in order to allow removal of bonjour, and the upgrade continued.
3. further things screwed up : mysqld won't stop. I interrupted the process, manually killed the process, then resumed. note to self: make sure i have enough space before i do dist-upgrade :)
4. removed some no-longer-used-or-needed stuffs: that include my kubuntu stuffs. now i have more free space :)
after upgrade report:
1. Beryl might not work totally, so needed some tweaks. but most of the things are fine. yippe, nothing broke.
2. I did a reset for my Beryl settings because Beryl does not work the same b4 the upgrade. I even have only 2 Desktops on Gnome, which is weird. So reset those things to normal.
3. xorg related stuffs were held back. So i manually ran Update-manager and it settled all stuffs. Some python libraries were still held back, so i just leave it for later work :)
4. tomboy broke :( time to dig it out, since i use it for note taking... update: it stopped working because it is now part of Gnome 2.16. earlier i start it manually in session manager, so it does not really work then ;) removed from session, and add Tomboy from the Add to Panel option. Tomboy is back
5. Firefox 2 is sweet (is that spelling check thingy part of Firefox 2? coolness), but that also means no more session manager... :(
that's all for this round on Ubuntu upgrade. :) it is still as easy as before, and the hiccups i had were partly due to the nature of my workstation: it is partly my testbed, where i try out funny things and experiment things. If you have a normal workstation that uses only plain Ubuntu (without mixture of kubuntu, for example) things should just work.
